In Power BI, you can visualise data across several dimensions using the breakdown tree view. It does data aggregation automatically and allows you to dig down into your dimensions in any sequence. Additionally, the visualisation uses artificial intelligence (AI).

This tool is useful for root cause investigation and ad hoc research.

The visualisation needs two different kinds of input:

The measure you want to analyse is called “analyse.” A measure or an aggregate must be used.

Explain by—one or more dimensions that you want to go further into.

Power Bi Tree of Decomposition Here is the visual default behaviour:

High Value: Takes into account all of the fields that are accessible and decides which one to dig into to obtain the greatest value of the analysed measure.

Low Value: Takes into account all of the fields that are accessible and chooses which one to dig into to obtain the measure under analysis’ lowest value.

Limitations and considerations

The tree can have a maximum of 50 tiers. There is a cap of 5000 data points that may be displayed on the tree at once.

In the following situations, the decomposition tree is not supported:

Analysis Services on-site

The following situations don’t allow for AI splits:

Analysis Services in Azure

Complex measures and measures from extensions schemas in ‘Analyse’ are restricted in Power BI Report Server’s ability to publish to the web.
